Recently we have been seeing red mites indoors on our window sills. Never had these before in the past 7 years. We have had a lot of rain this spring if that has anything to do with it. What insecticide can we use to get rid of them?
Harford County Maryland
Expert Response
They might be Clover Mites, as this sounds like their behavior, though other mite types may be possible (not that it would change the approach to management much). Use of an insecticide is not necessary, and actually, few insecticide ingredients affect mites, since mites are not insects. All that needs to be done is to seal any gaps/cracks that can be granting them access to the indoors, vacuum-up those that still make it in, and consider clearing away some vegetation or leaf litter that might be piled up against the home foundation on the sides of the building the mites are exploring. If nothing else works and you need to resort to a pesticide, look for a product labeled for mites that is used on the exterior walls outside the home and follow its usage instructions carefully. As the linked Penn State page notes, be careful about getting the spray on any desirable plants in case it "burns" their foliage.
