Food safety #867683

Asked May 09, 2024, 8:34 AM EDT

My power was off for 28 hours. Is the food in the fridge safe to eat or should we throw it out?

Expert Response

Cindy,

Perishable foods with temperatures that are 45°F or below (measured with a food thermometer) should be safe, but should be cooked and consumed as soon as possible.  With your refrigerator being off for 28 hours, my guess is that the temperature is over 45°F, the only way to be sure is to use a food thermometer.  A full freezer will keep the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. If the freezer thermometer reads 40° F or below, the food is safe and may be refrozen.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
