Dead branch Honey Crisp apple tree removal #867663

Asked May 08, 2024, 7:58 PM EDT

This spring our apple trees are blooming like crazy however there is a dead branch on honey crisp. Also a tent worm hut invaded that same branch a couple years ago. Don't know if it had anything to do with it. Also we've had severe drought past 3 years. It's spring here now, if I only knew dead branch was there I would have removed it during February. I need to know how to deal with it while it's growing season spring time. Where should I cut branch so I don't weaken any where else or get a disease on tree?

Expert Response

The U of Mn has prepared an excellent worksheet on growing apples.  It includes a detailed section on how to prune the trees and include videos.  These should guide you in pruning your tree.  Don't wait until winter to prune the dead branch - do it now, according to the recommendations.
