Holes in yard—chipmunks? Other critters? #867657

Asked May 08, 2024, 7:10 PM EDT

There are clusters of holes in my yard ranging from 0.5” to 1.5” in diameter. We live next to the woods and host lots of wildlife—mammalian, reptilian, and other. I can identify the small cicada holes and the large fox (or rabbit?) holes, but these intermediate sized ones have me stumped.

Expert Response

Chipmunk is one guess (at least for some of the larger ones), but unfortunately identifying the digger of holes in a yard is outside of the realm of our expertise, though you can try inquiring with wildlife biologists at the MD Department of Natural Resources. An email can be sent to <personal data hidden> (especially if you want to share photos) or, if you would like to speak to someone, they have a Wildlife and Heritage Service phone number at<personal data hidden>. The phone line is staffed during regular business hours, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, except state holidays and weekends.
