Hi Marie,
I'm sorry to hear that--how frustrating!
There are a few reasons why daffodils might fail to flower.
1. It could be the variety--not all of them naturalize well, and only flower a year or two in the best circumstances.
2. The plants were allowed to set seed (weren't deadheaded), or they weren't fertilized or in fertile enough soil. These cause the plant to be without enough energy to flower repeatedly.
3. Removal of the foliage when it was still green--this can prevent the plant from storing enough food to have the resources to flower.
4. The bulbs could be too wet or too hot during the resting period (ie the summer). Bulbs like to stay cool, and soil that stays very wet can cause them to rot, leaving just bulblets to create foliage each year but that aren't large enough to flower.
Try applying an all purpose fertilizer at labeled rates this year, and don't remove the foliage until it is yellow at the earliest). If you remember what variety you purchased, you can find out if it is a good naturalizer. If you buy more bulbs, choose varieties that are labeled as good naturalizers for the best chance of a robust display year after year.
If the bulbs are in a part of your yard that stays wet, or is in full sun through the summer, you might move them to a place that will stay drier or cooler, as needed if applicable.
I hope this is helpful!
Cordially,
John
