Perennials that will grow under Crimson Maple tree #867632

Asked May 08, 2024, 5:05 PM EDT

I have a large Crimson Maple in my back yard with deep shade underneath. I planted a lot of hostas there over 10 years ago and they haven't grown much or have disappeared. I planted 12 pachysandra plants about 4 years ago and the patch is the same size. I understand that this tree has a blanket of fine roots that soak up all the moisture. Is there anything hardy here that may work? I'm in South Fridley near Columbia Heights John

Expert Response

Good morning and thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.

Maple trees not only take the moisture out, but a lot of the nutrients as well. No matter what you plant, in order to get a good healthy plant you will need to water and fertilize regularly.  I water my Hostas at least once a week.

You could try hardy succulents.   I have also used Hostas, and coral bells.  The coral bells didn’t make it.  My grass doesn’t grow under them as well.  I have mulched the area directly under the tree.  You could add statuary or something else besides plants if you don’t want to mess with the plants.

I found suggestions from others: euphorbia, sedums, lady’s mantle, day lilies and astilbe.

Good luck!
