Where can I learn how to make soap naturally? #867617

I would like to be able to make soap naturally, without pre-made or store bought things. Is there a resource or demonstration available?

OSU Extension doesn't have any publications or experts at this time that would be helpful, but I have done a small bit of research on this subject as a potential living history class for the museum where I volunteer. Your best best would probably be to find books at your local library. They tend to be vetted a bit more than just buying a book from Amazon, which might give you advice that is incorrect. It has the added bonus of being free.

Making specifically soap involves the use of lye, which can be hazardous if not handled properly (long gloves, eye protection, the correct type of materials for supplies so you don't cause a reaction, etc.), which is why I dropped the idea as a living history class. Once the soap has cured (usually 2-3 weeks) and been tested for the proper pH, then it's safe to use.

You can also make bars and liquids to clean that are not technically considered "soap" and do not use a process involving lye. That may be something you would want to consider, but I would definitely start at your local library. They'll have books with recipes and ways of calculating the proper ingredient ratios, which are important to successfully making something you can use.
