Viburnum small leaves andsmall blooms #867578
Asked May 08, 2024, 1:16 PM EDT
My older viburnum (Korean spice?) has very small leaves this spring. The blooms were also smaller.
I did cut back a large vertical branch last Fall. And we have had a very wet Spring. What can be causing this.
Thanks,

Hello Kerry,
That shrub looks more like a warfaringtree viburnum (Virburnum lantana). Read about it here: https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=278956
As you can see, this viburnum prefers dryer conditions so perhaps the amount of rain has affected it. Other environmental conditions may have affected it also, such as herbicide sprays on the lawn. Or has anything happened to the roots or soil. A soil analysis may help you learn the cause. For a soil testing kit, go to: https://shop.msu.edu/products/soil-test-mailer
There may have been a sudden frost after the leaves and flowers appeared, causing a thinning of the shrub.
It is difficult to analyze the cause of the problem from a picture. MSU Extension’s Plant and Pest Diagnostic Lab can provide a more definitive diagnosis. To learn how to submit a sample and/or picture to the lab, go to: https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/
A certified arborist will be able to assess the tree. Go to: http://www.treesaregood.org the website of the International Society of Arboriculture to find an arborist in your area.
