Rabbit repellent #867548

Asked May 08, 2024, 11:20 AM EDT

Hello.  I attended the class called Gardening Tips for Northern Colorado at Ft Collins Nursery on 2/10/2024 and the speaker who I believe was Alison O'Conner mentioned a natural, non-toxic treatment that could be used on grass to repel rabbits however I did not write it down and I do not see it in the printed material.  Do you know the name of this product?

Thank you, Lisa Graham

Expert Response

Lisa,
There is a fertilizer called Milorganite that often (not always) will repel rabbits from your yard. It's sold at Fort Collins nursery, as well as at Ace Hardware stores.

It has to be applied frequently - every 4-8 weeks during the growing season - to be effective. Each time it should be applied at a rate of 16 pounds of fertilizer per 1000 square feet of yard area. It can be applied to the lawn and flower beds - and even in vegetable gardens, if rabbits are a problem there.

The BEST solution for rabbits, however, is exclusion by fencing (hardware cloth works best).

Let me know if you have any questions!
