Grass identification #867532

Asked May 08, 2024, 10:06 AM EDT

Hi, we have a .85 acre plot and a large area of our property we’ve seeded with blue grama grass that has been established for 3-5 years for the most part but other early season grass growth is starting to take over large areas of the blue grama area. Is there a state or county office you’d suggest who can help us identify what to do to prevent the growth of the other grasses or if we should let them coexist? Or a private landscape company that is well versed with these grasses? Our hand pulling is no longer sufficient. Thanks in advance.

Expert Response

Rochelle,
I can usually identify the grasses from good photographs.
Send high resolution photos taken from about 12-16 inches away. Depending on the species of grass, there are herbicides that can be applied to control unwanted grasses. If you are opposed to the use of herbicides, there is little that can be done - beyond physical removal.
Unfortunately, few landscape contractors understand weed management (especially removing unwanted grasses) in native grass area like your blue grama stand.

If you find it easier, you can text me the photos. My cell number is<personal data hidden>.

Thanks,
tony
