Red Maple varieties #867523

Asked May 08, 2024, 9:02 AM EDT

Hello.. we are located in Cass County and wish to plant a few red maples. However, we are adamant about only planting species native to Cass County. The landscaper is proposing the Red Maple - Scarlet Jewell. But the very name has me wondering if this is a cultivated species and not the native. My research doesn't find anything specific. Can you help?

Expert Response

The red maple is a native tree and this variety was developed in northern Minnesota by Bailey Nursery.  I can find no information on the specific method by which Bailey created the cultivar.  It may have discovered this plant and cloned it or cross-pollinated desirable trees or used another method.  It does sound like a superb specimen.  For more information, see
