Is my kohlrabi ok? Does it need something more in the soil?

Expert Response

Hi, Rachel,

Kohlrabi is in the brassica family and is susceptible to the caterpillar of the cabbage moth. The ragged holes on the leaves are indicative of the presence of this caterpillar. You can read about the cabbage looper by clicking here. The article has the following recommendations:
  • Check leaf undersides early in season for feeding damage. Later, monitor for large larvae and droppings.
  • Inspect transplants carefully. Camouflaged larvae are hard to spot.
  • Use row cover if this is a yearly pest.
  • Handpick and destroy larvae.
  • Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), an organic pesticide, can be used if loopers become established. Neem is also effective.
Cabbage looper pupae can overwinter in cabbage and vegetable debris, so ensure there is no plant debris in and around your garden at the end of the growing season.

Thank you for your question.
