Edgeworthia Issue #867438

Asked May 07, 2024, 2:20 PM EDT

This Edgeworthia, which i put in last spring, was ok through the fall and had weak blooms on the one stem during the winter. The upper branches were slow to leaf out this spring. What happened?

Expert Response

Hello,

It's not uncommon for trees or shrubs to lose branches after a stressing summer and/or winter. There could be many reason why the plant was stressed or just underperformed causing branch dieback. It could be as simple as cold damage.  I have one but it is somewhat protected by other plants.  This may help your plant.
If the branch doesn't leaf out  a few weeks  they probably won't anymore, so you're good to prune it out. It should not hurt the plant but if  the rest of the plant doesn't continue to thrive this year please let us know and we can revisit what may be happening.
Here is a link for more details on growing Edgeworthia, its a great plant!
