ants eating an old London Plane tree #867435

Asked May 07, 2024, 2:03 PM EDT

I have carpenter ants eating in one of my big old London plane trees and I have to save the tree. They are frantically going in and out of holes with tree bits and spitting it out and creating a pile of saw dust on the ground. What do I do please? ! I sprinkled ant hill killing granules at the base, but it had no effect. It needs to be treated in the holes. Help!

Expert Response

Carpenter ants (Camponotus spp.), do not eat wood and they don’t attack healthy wood within the tree. They are carving out a home in the deteriorating heartwood of the tree. Old trees can persist for many years with an active carpenter ant colony within them with no adverse consequences. If you'd like to have the tree assessed by a certified arborist, you can find a list of arborists in your area using the Find an Arborist tool on the website for the International Society of Arboriculture here: https://www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist
