Our matador maple tree was professionally planted early last fall. We put a plastic guard on the lower part of the trunk to protect it from critters over the winter. We wonder if we should remove it now and if we should put it back on again in the fall. The tree looks very healthy now and has lots of new leaves.

Thanks for the question.
I think that you could remove the plastic guard at this time. There may still be various critters around (rabbits!) that might start gnawing on it. Perhaps if you wanted to be extra safe, you could consider putting some type of fencing around it?
Good luck. Thanks for consulting us.
