How do I do a soil test for my hydrangeas?
Wayne County Ohio
Expert Response
Joyce, You do not say, but I am guessing you want to know the pH of your soil in order to produce pink or blue blooms on your hydrangeas. At lower pH levels (acid soils) the plant will produce blue flowers and at higher pH ranges (more alkaline soils) pink flowers.
I found a science based website with information on hydrangeas
https://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/hyg-1263
and two (2) on soil testing
https://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/hyg-1132 https://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/anr-0107.
These sites should provide you with the information you will need to care for your hydrangeas, perform a soil test and locate a lab to do the testing. I wish you success with growing your plants and receiving enjoyment from them.
