How to Deter Slugs #867394

Asked May 07, 2024, 10:55 AM EDT

Our garden shows signs of slugs, small in size but growing in number and appetite. So far we have removed them by hand. YouTube refers to 2 products to fight slugs: Corry's Slug and snail killer and Sluggo. We're concerned about its safety for people, pets, and environment. Is there a safe product or method to fight this problem?

Eliminating slugs from your yard will be impossible but if you try to reduce their habitat, especially near plants that are seeming to have a problem with them. You can also set traps for them. There are various homemade options that you can try. Beer traps only work if they full in and drown, or else you just have tipsy slugs.

The brand 'Sluggo' uses iron phosphate and is labeled for safe use around edible plants so it is seemingly safe for use around people pets and the environment.  Cory's brand says it is safe around veggie areas.   You could bring the product labels to your vet to make sure it is safe, in the instance your pet eats a slug that has any product in it.

We also found this information on iron sulfate versus sodium ferric edta, the 2 main ingredients in the products. You could confirm this with you vet. National Pesticide Information Center 'Could Snail Bait Hurt My Dog'
