Mature trees and hard soil #867383

Asked May 07, 2024, 10:13 AM EDT

Hello. I have 2 themed questions. 1) I have mature Oak trees and are experiencing situations where the bark is beginning to randomly fall off. Do I have pests or something causing tis? 2) I live in Milaca and the soil here is so very hard. I am having a very difficult time getting proper irrigation and am looking for recommendations on what I can do to mitigate the soil and make it more plant friendly. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

There are a number of reasons why bark might be shedding from your oak tree.  Look to see if there seem to be other problems with your tree, which would help with a diagnosis.  For detailed information on this condition, see https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/shedding-peeling-and-splitting-bark-shade-trees

Another panelist recently gave a detailed answer to a question similar to yours.  I am attaching it so that you can check the links and determine a course of action for your ground.  He basically recommends a soil test to help you determine what amendments would be helpful to make pliable soil.

Good luck with your projects.
