What’s on my tomato seedling? #867355

Asked May 06, 2024, 11:38 PM EDT

I noticed this white stuff on my tomato seedlings. It starts almost like a blister and when scratched off, its leaves a wet open wound. I tried treating some with rubbing alcohol, thinking it was a bug, but now I’m not so sure. Is it a fungus? Whatever it is, is there a treatment? I started them too early and have been struggling with them for awhile. Leaves began to curl, yellow and drop. Thought I was just over watering. But then the blisters showed up. Most of them seem frail and puny

Good Morning Anne,

There are many factors that could be affecting your plants. Are you using artificial lights? Did you use sterile potting soil? Were the containers clean?  It appears to be some sort of fungus.

In the current weather, you could put them outside in the sun for a few hours and see if it improves. If not, it's not too late to start some new plants. Tomatoes germinate in a few days.

Even though your plants are tall and stringy, you can plant the tomatoes deep, leaving only a few leaves above the soil line.  They will sprout roots from the stem.

Good Luck!
