Apple tree pruning timing and fire blight #867353

Asked May 06, 2024, 11:01 PM EDT

My pruning got delayed this year and we have a bit early spring and a Braeburn apple tree that I think has fireblight has 2 branches that have that are dead (one in picture and another one at the top) and need to be romoved and a trunk canker(picture) I exposed last year, needs some more removal. Besides the trunk I removed a dead branch at the top and the live branch next to it. Last year I cleaned my tools with each cut with Lysol 1:2 dilution. Please confirm that this is fireblight? Should I do this cutting now or wait till next dormant season? Do you have any advise on how to do it? According to https://ask2.extension.org/kb/faq.php?id=397276 If pruning must be done during the growing season, sterilize pruning tools between each cut by spraying the cutting blade with disinfectant or by dipping the cutting surface in disinfectant for 1 or more minutes. Effective disinfectants include rubbing alcohol, a 10% bleach solution (one part household bleach to nine parts water, equivalent to 1.5 cups bleach to 1 gallon of water) and undiluted Lysol. Spray pruning wounds with clear on trees which can be infected with fireblight. Thanks for you help.

Fire blight cannot be positively identified from a photo. Samples can be sent to the plant disease clinic for diagnosis. The dead branches can be removed anytime and the method you used is correct. It is important to sterilize pruners after each cut. A canker as large as the one in the photo will probably kill the tree within the next 5 years and because it is on the main trunk there isn’t an effective treatment. I would plant a replacement tree now so it will have a few years growth by the time the infected tree dies.
