Planting tomatoes #867338

Asked May 06, 2024, 8:57 PM EDT

What happens if I plant my tomatoes before the soil temp is above 55 degrees? Does it hurt the plant or only slows it’s growing? Thank you!

Expert Response

Hi Tracy,

The plants usually just sit there and don't grow much until it gets warmer. However, if the soil is too wet they can rot with cold temperatures. It's difficult for the plants to absorb nutrients, too. If you can wait, do.

Hope this helps.
