Frogs or Cicadas? #867335

Asked May 06, 2024, 8:42 PM EDT

I've noticed a cicada-like buzz, just in the evenings lately (with all our rain). How can you tell if it's frogs or cicadas? Also this rain has done WONDERS for my garden.

Expert Response

It is most likely frogs. Cicadas haven't emerged yet to start their buzzing.

Check out the call of a Grey/Cope's Tree Frog on some YouTube videos: https://youtube.com/shorts/77-dhi2jI14?feature=shared

They are all over Maryland and most of the east coast and call in spring and early summer. The male and female calls are a bit different and one is more 'buzzy' sounding.

Cool. Thanks, Emily.
I have been LOVING gardening and staying close to nature. You tend to 'catch' nuances.
And I love learning stuff! Thanks for the clip. I'll check it out.

Thank you,
Wendy
