Garlic Mustard Disposal #867332

Asked May 06, 2024, 8:23 PM EDT

We are confused about how to dispose of the garlic mustard in our yard. Just found out it is officially a noxious weed. We have a fairly large amount. Can we put it in our yard waste that Minneapolis picks up? Do we have to take it somewhere? Really not sure what to do. Thank you. Martha Hardy

Expert Response

It is illegal to put garlic mustard into the yard waste.  You either have to deal with it on site (burning it or letting it decay in compost) or take it to an approved disposal site:

Thanks for your speedy reply. How do we find an appropriate disposal site in Minneapolis or Hennepin County?

As per the MDA website I linked to, the best way to dispose is to dispose on site:  kill the plants and compost.  It is not necessary to transport them someplace else.  In fact, it is preferred that you don't.  There is less change the plant will disperse if you leave it in place.

If you must move it, contact the facility first to see if they take noxious weeds.  For instance, I found this facility on the MDA locator map:
