How can I save my tree? #867331

Asked May 06, 2024, 8:16 PM EDT

Hello, we bought a house in the fall and it has a largish tree in the front yard. I do not know what kind of tree, I’m so sorry for the lack of info, maybe you can tell what kind it is. The previous owners had placed a raised garden bed around it (mulch on top) as you can see from the photos. I know that this is not good for the tree and can suffocate the roots. I believe it is killing the tree, as there is already a lot of dead trunk/branches in the middle. What my main question is, if we tear all this out and let the roots breathe, will it potentially fix the issue, or is it too far gone with the damage already caused and it just needs to be cut down? Any other suggestions to help the tree be saved would be great too, we really want to save it, but I wasn’t sure who to even ask to help. I’m not sure how old the tree is and I apologize for the lack of good info about the tree, we just don’t know much about it. Thank you so much!! Let me know if you need any more info/photos.

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.  Yes, your tree is very stressed.  Whether your tree will survive or not, only time will tell.  It won't hurt to try to save it.  I advise you to flatten all the mulch outward to the drip line and remove it from the trunk down to the trunk flair.  Please see the fact sheets below for instructions on accomplishing my advice.  Let us know if you have further questions.  Carol B.
