Grass dying #867316

Asked May 06, 2024, 6:43 PM EDT

My lawn on our empty lot behind our house is dying this spring in a large area. Last year it had a central 8 foot circle that had died that appeared to be possible snow mold. But in the past 3 weeks since it got warm only the area outside what is shown in the photos has greened up and is growing. The remaining area is dead. The dirt does have evidence of ants in many places. Is it possible for ants to kill this large of a continuous space? It is about 50 feet long and 15 feet wide. It is nearly all in full sun most of the day. If it is ants, how do I treat it and get new grass to grow? There is a linden tree in the growing grass area that does get Japanese beetles, but that grass under it is still growing.

Expert Response

You may have Japanese beetle grubs or white grubs eating the grass roots.  This usually happens in late summer/fall.  Now is the time to investigate whether grubs are present by pulling up turf and looking for them.  The website shows what to look for.  Treatments are also discussed in the following websites.  If you do not see grubs, send a closeup of the grass nearest the bare spots including the roots on a white background.
