Christmas Cactus are epiphytes. In their native habitat they live in the trees and get water and nutrients from the debris that collects around their roots. Therefore, their root need a well-drained soil that allows water to move through and not sit around the roots because the roots will rot in standing water.
If you want to prepare the soil yourself, you can use a mixture of 2/3 of any comercial potting soil and 1/3 sand. This mixture will allow the water to move through the pot. Be sure to empty any water that collects in the tray or dish under the plant.
You may also purchase a comercial soil that is specifically designed for cactus and succulents.
