Baby turtles in the spring? #867304

Asked May 06, 2024, 5:32 PM EDT

I live in the SW suburbs around Bryant Lake. Last weekend I saw a baby turtle walking across my sidewalk. We often have turtles digging holes and laying eggs in the summer, July or August, I assumed they hatched the same year but was not aware that any turtle hatched in the spring, in late April or early May. Mystified in Eden Prairie, can you help?

Expert Response

There is very little information on the DNR site about the hatching times of turtles but I did find one statement that Wood Turtles hatch in the spring.  The time of egg laying and hatching seems to vary with the variety.  https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/reptiles_amphibians/helping-turtles-roads.html
