Nutsedge #867303

Asked May 06, 2024, 5:31 PM EDT

How do I get rid of nutsedge in my vegetable garden? I know there is a "nut" attached to the roots. Other than pulling it out by hand, trying to get the "nut", how do I remove.

Expert Response

Hi,

It is really difficult to pull by hand because if you don't get the pieces of rhizome new shoots will grow from that.

You can view our page on yellow nutsedge and there is a list of some chemical controls. You would just want to check the label to make sure it is safe to use in vegetable gardens. Everything we are reading it only says for use in lawns or turf grass, so you may not want to risk any contamination around edibles.

You can first try to dig whatever you can get. If you just keep pulling repeatedly or smothering after that, eventually it will get starved out.

It can be a nuisance in  veggie areas.

Good luck!
