Does my madrone have leaf blight? #867285

Asked May 06, 2024, 4:20 PM EDT

I planted this tree from a seedling and want to take good care of it. I think it might have leaf blight? But some of the dead leaves are on top, suggesting winter exposure (ice storms…) How should I care for it? Also, there are some low branches - on the ground, basically. Should I cut them off fur more air circulation?

Thank you for your question, Julie.  A reliable diagnosis can be made only upon closer observation of the leaves.  There are at least 2 fungal diseases which cause spots on the leaves, and the type of leaf death you're observing.  https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/madrone-arbutus-menziesii-leaf-spots-blights

and https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/madrone-arbutus-menziesii-twig-dieback

I suggest that you follow the cultural control mechanisms in both of these articles, since there are no recommended fungicides available.  Alternatively, you can send leaf samples to the OSU Plant Clinic (https://bpp.oregonstate.edu/how-submit-plant-materials) for a microscopic diagnosis.  Since there is no way to "cure" the problem(s), cultural controls are your best option.  Good luck!
