Planting Christmas Trees #867266

Asked May 06, 2024, 2:27 PM EDT

Hello, we are preparing land in the Gold Hill area to plant Christmas trees. We have done some research, but wanted to get your expert advice on the a few questions. 1. What is the best varietal of Christmas tree to plant in Southern Oregon for our climate? Our preference is Noble Fir. 2. Where is the best place to source seedlings? 3. It is recommended to irrigate Christmas tree farms in Southern Oregon?

Jackson County Oregon

Expert Response

Hello,

OSU Extension has been without a Christmas Tree Specialist for the last couple of years, but is in the process of hiring for that position. I know that interviews for the position have been completed and we are nearing the end of the process, but no announcement has yet been made re: an accepted candidate and their planned start date. I would suggest trying us again in a month for an update on the Christmas Tree Specialist position as there is not a general OSU Extension Forester position for Jackson/Josephine counties, and Christmas trees are a specialty somewhat outside the realm of traditional forestry as well.

Thank you,

Autumn Ellison, OSU Forestry and Natural Resources Extension
