Pasture grazing and hay producing ground for reproductive horses #867263

Asked May 06, 2024, 2:26 PM EDT

I am looking for a legume that can be grazed as well as put into hay that grows well on the west side of the state where it is not irrigated. This ground and hay will also be fed to horses that are reproductively active.

Linn County Oregon

Expert Response

White clover is the most common legume forage inter-planted with grass in Western Oregon pasture and hay fields. White clover is a perennial that grows well in a range of soils, from well to poorly-drained soils. It tolerates long cool-weather flooding and a pH range of 5.8 to 7. There are definitely other options, though many are annuals that need to be replanted or be left to go to seed to remain in the field. Big trefoil and birdsfoot trefoil are other options, though establishment can be more difficult.
