Ice damaged evergreen clematis #867262

Asked May 06, 2024, 2:19 PM EDT

My evergreen clematis was terribly damaged by the ice storm in January. I'm wondering how much I should trim it back. I have already removed most of the dead leaves and other parts. Also wondering if it will come back. Any advice appreciated. I live in Portland. Thank you

Hi Lori,
Thank you for using Ask Extension.

At this point I would recommend patience.  It's likely that the smaller vines are dead, but you can test them.  If the vines break easily and are brown, then it's dead and should be pruned out.  Some vines can be cut back severely to rejuvenate.  Before taking such drastic measures, be sure to research the type you have.

We are lucky to have the Rogerson Clematis collection

I looked at upcoming classes and events and there is a Clematis 101 where you may find practical answers to help address your concerns.
