Best ornamental tree in MN #867261

Asked May 06, 2024, 2:18 PM EDT

We would like to plant an ornamental tree in an area of full sun but we are unsure which one would be best. We would like to keep it relatively small (12' x 10' height/width, or smaller). Our desired features are color that lasts more than a few weeks in spring, fragrance, attraction to hummingbirds (and pollinators), and relatively low maintenance. It is in an area within our automated sprinkler system. We have found potential options online, including a Bloomerang Lilac, a Mis Kim lilac, a Serviceberry, a North Star Cherry, or maybe a crab apple. We welcome any comments or other suggestions/recommendations. Thanks!

Hi Jerry,

Among the trees you list (it's a good list) the serviceberry, North Star cherry and crabapple offer interest longer than spring bloom. The star here is serviceberry, which has white flowers in spring, blue fruit in summer and leaves that turn red or yellow in fall. It's a pretty carefree plant, and you can choose from a shrub form or tree form. Serviceberries are widely available in garden centers at this time of year.

Here's a U of M page on serviceberries:

Hope this helps. Good luck with your tree planning!
