Diagnosing a White Pine Injury #867236

Asked May 06, 2024, 12:54 PM EDT

Hi - I have a property near Fergus Falls MN and had some Eastern White Pine planted in 2019. They were about 2 feet tall at the time of planting and are now upwards of 9 feet tall. One of them last fall experienced some sign of injury or a fungus and I would like to know what this is and if it can be treated. The tree appears fine for the bottom 2/3, but the top portion has sap oozing down the trunk and the needles are an unhealthy color of light green or even yellow in some places. Can you tell me what this might be? Included some pics from this past weekend. Thank you!

It sound like Pine Bark Beetle damage.  Although the link I am giving you states Red Pine, White Pines are also damaged by beetles.  You may want to contact a Certified Arborist for an examination and any possible control.  At that link, click on Find An Arborist, put in your zip when prompted and a list of certified arborists in your area will appear.  https://extension.umn.edu/forest-pests-and-diseases/managing-pine-bark-beetle damage   https://www.treesaregood.org/
