moss covering garden #867204

Asked May 06, 2024, 10:57 AM EDT

My garden does not drain well. I have been fighting (by scraping it off with a layer of soil) a massive amount of moss covering the garden everyt ime we have a rainy spell. This spring is the worst choking the more delicate spring plants from surfacing. What should I do first to get rid of it, and secondly to change the soil density? Finally, do you have students, or others available to take on doing it physically? Or is it best to simply give me instructions and I’ll find someone to help me? Cheryl Stearns 612.963.7516

Expert Response

Moss can be difficult to eradicate. First step is to get a soil test.  This will help to determine what steps are needed to change your soil so that moss will not grow there.  Second step is to get rid of the moss you already have. Third step is to improve the drainage, pH or whatever the soil test indicates is problematic. See the websites for more information.

You can contact the Horticulture department for information on student workers.  They used to have a bulletin board for posting work notices.  I am not sure if they currently have one.

You may have more luck contacting local garden centers or the Hennepin County Master Gardeners.
