Planting non-indigenous trees #867190

Asked May 06, 2024, 10:02 AM EDT

I joined the arbor day donation to get ten live oak saplings to plant. I assumed they would send me Southern live oaks, but instead I received coast live oaks. I don't want to be the cause of introducing troublesome or invasive plants. Are these ok to plant in Fort Bend County?

Expert Response

Hi Rebeca,
Thanks for contacting us and we appreciate your concern about potentially introducing an invasive species.

The good news is that typically when you see something labeled as a "Coastal Live Oak" it is just an alternate way of referring to what we normally call a Southern Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) so it should be just fine to plant the trees you received.

We would strongly recommend you consider the mature size of these trees when planting them (they can reach 60 feet in height and as much as 90 feet wide!) and potentially share some of your trees with neighbors!

Thanks again for contacting us and if you have any additional questions just let us know at <personal data hidden> or<personal data hidden>.
