White powder in lawn soil #867160

Asked May 05, 2024, 10:35 PM EDT

Have some dead grass spots this spring. When I pulled the grass up the soil underneath was gray and had white powder in it. Picture attached. Thinking it is some sort of mold, mildew, or other fungus? Do I need to treat it before adding new soil and re-seeding?

Expert Response

I can’t tell what it is from a photo because the resolution of a photo isn’t great enough. It is likely it is snow mold and raking it is all you need to do. You will want to break up the surface before putting down grass seed. Good soil contact is one of the key factors for success.
