What natural/non-toxic methods can be used to eradicate a large ant colony that has taken over half of a flower bed located under a birch tree? The tree is in the center of the circular bed, which is about 10 feet in diameter. The bed was neglected for a few years and has periwinkle and grass growing in it. The ants are small black ants. Not large like carpenter ants.

Hello Jill,
I found an article from the University of Minnesota Extension that I believe will answer your questions about the ants under the birch tree. It's important to identify the type of ants so that you are better able to control them. There are natural methods such as pouring boiling water into the nest, along with using pesticides and traps to control the problem. The following article is a great resource for ant problems.
