I graduated from the UofM in 2010 and now live in Annandale. I was curious if the U has ever done any research or had any success with Almond Trees in MN?

I am not aware of research into almond trees in Minnesota, but then I am only a volunteer Master Gardener.
My opinion is that it would be a stretch. Almonds are hardy to zone 5 and that is pushing it. Zone 6 is safer. We are still in zone 4. You might be interested in this similar question from a few years ago:

Thank you. How would one go about trying to create an almond tree that would be suitable for zone 4? Is there a research team at the U that could assist?
