Wild onion? #867128
Asked May 05, 2024, 5:22 PM EDT
A neighbor dug up these plants from their yard, thinking they were grass and wanting them gone in any case. I happened to notice that the bottoms look rather onion-like and thought they might be some wild alium-family plant. I did some research, and it seems like these are probably wild onion (Allium canadense). The main concern I turned up is to make sure they aren't death camas, which looks a lot like a wild onion but is rather poisonous.
From what I read, the good thing is that basically nothing outside the alium family smells like an onion. So, if I cut one open and it smells strongly of onion, I can be sure it's safe to eat. Is that correct?
And, can you tell from the photos whether my identification is correct, or if not, what other wild allium it might be?
