yellowing spruce needles this Spring #867120

Hello, we planted 12 spruce trees about 4-5 feet in height in nearly solid clay about 3 years ago. This Spring, the entire trees are turning a yellowish color. I am wondering how to fix this problem? Any ideas? We are new to planting in clay-so wonder if it means too much water or too little water? The trees are not in an area saturated with water, although, the recent rain has kept the soil wet for days. Should I give each tree a half a fertilizer spike this Spring? Maybe that would help? Thank you for any information you can give.

Expert Response
Fertilizing may help if the yellowing is caused by winter browning or nutrient deficiencies. A more readily available soil drench may work better than fertilizer sticks for this. Spruce generally tolerate clay soil unless it is compacted. If the trees are in a low area they may be sitting in water and the roots will die.
