Hello Helen,
Thank you for reaching out to the UVM Extension Master Gardener Program with your question!
The best types will depend on numerous factors and will be site specific. Some of the key factors include: the amount of sun the site receives, the soil type (clay, sandy, loam), soil wetness, and how much room the perennial will have to grow or how big you’d like it to be.
If you have not done a soil sample on the site you plan to plant it, it may be beneficial. If you decide to do this, you can find more information here: https://www.uvm.edu/extension/agricultural-and-environmental-testing-lab.
Some hydrangeas are more beneficial to pollinators than others, making them preferable.
In general hydrangeas grow best in well-drained soil and prefer warm morning sun and cooler afternoon shade, although some species do better in full sun and some better in cooler, less dry sites (https://www.aces.edu/blog/topics/lawn-garden/hydrangeas/). Avoid planting under large trees and in full shade.
Windsor County is a 5b on the USDA Hardiness Zone map so whatever you decide you’ll want to ensure you plant something with a hardiness to at least 5b.
Additionally, the best type will depend on the level of pruning you plan to do in the future. Some types require more pruning than others and get pruned at different times of the year. The above article discusses types and pruning methods, among many other factors for successful planting and growing.
Last, when considering the best type for your site, you may also take into consideration color preference, bloom size and form (mopheads versus lacecaps).

Thank you!
