Trunk cracking #867085

Asked May 05, 2024, 11:06 AM EDT

We have a crepe myrtle with several cracks in the trunk and lower branches. Is it possible or worthwhile to bind the split areas together in order for them to graft together? A scratch test appears that the tree is still green. It has not come out in leaf, and is starting to sprout at the base.
The tree has never been topped.

We would like to try to save it, if possible.

Thank you! Any help would be appreciated.

Expert Response

Damage is caused by cold weather and dry soils. The split trunks will probably die. Binding them will not help. Right now just wait and see. New basal sprouts can be selected over time to form new trunks.
