Hydrangea #867075

Asked May 05, 2024, 9:37 AM EDT

Hi! Wondering if it normal that this hydrangea is growing back from the root and not from the stems/branches. My other hydrangea have buds all along their branches. If it is normal, I should probably cut back the dead branches right away.

Expert Response

Your hydrangea is a zone 5 plant, and your area is zone 4b to zone 5.  If planted in an unprotected area, this may affect your plant's ability to grow.  There is new growth, however, so hopefully your hydrangea will rebound.  You can cut the stems a bit to check if they are alive.  If they are, you should see some green.  If they are dry and brittle and grey, you can cut back the stems.  Otherwise, leave them and hopefully new buds will emerge from them.  Good luck.
