Care for a Double Yellow Desert Rose Plant #867057
Asked May 04, 2024, 8:41 PM EDT
Hi - A friend who lives in FL ordered a Double Yellow Desert Rose plant for me recently. He came with no name and no care instructions. She has several that are beautiful!! I live in CO. Different conditions. I love succulents, but won't let myself purchase any because no matter how little water I give it I always overwater, killing it. I want to try to keep this alive, but I seem unable to find any info on this on the internet. I'm in a small condo so this would be a 'house plant'. I have windows in the east and north only. I do have a balcony which gets a bit of sun, but I also get Japanese Beetles in the summer and don't want to put this plant outside where they'll get to it. And finally, one of the few things I've found on it is that it doesn't like indoor heat. Hm... Kinda need that here in CO in the winter. Does this plant have a chance at staying alive with me??? If so, very specific care instructions would be appreciated!!!
Thank you so much!!!

Expert Response
Light: The desert rose likes full sun, so if you can choose a location that gets the most light would be best, so may be a bit challenging with your east and north locations.
Soil: The desert rose likes well-draining sandy or gravelly soil. You can look for a potting mix that is designed for cactus.
Water: During the growing season, keep the soil moist but never soaked. Check the soil periodically and allow it to dry out completely before watering. Be sure your container has adequate drainage holes to help avoid the plant retaining too much water. In the fall and winter, this plant typically goes dormant and will require less water.
Good luck and enjoy your Desert Rose gift!
