Thank you for your question, Ted.  Most broadform herbicides carry a risk of harming adjacent plants, so mechanical (elbow grease) and cultural controls are safer.  Those include mulches and weed removal early in the year.  You might also try a pre-emergent herbicide such as Preen, which prevents germination.
