Potted Star Jasmine needs help! #867016

Asked May 04, 2024, 1:35 PM EDT

I have a star jasmine that has been in a pot on my deck about 8 years. It used to be in a partial shade location, but last summer it was in full sun. It is not doing well. It has lost a lot of leaves and has some spots on other leaves. Do you think I can save it, or do you think it has worn out its life in the pot? Thank you for any help, ideas.

Thank you for your question, Becky.  This UC article has a list of this species' problems:  https://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/GARDEN/PLANTS/starjasmine.html

I suggest that you remove the plant from the pot to see whether it is root bound, preventing absorption of adequate water and nutrients.   The roots should be pruned, and repotted in a well draining container.  The red leaves are an indication of a water or nutrient issue.  I suggest that you use fresh potting soil with added nutrients.  You might also consider pruning the branches, as well.  Good luck!
