weed that is kind of grass-like #866990

Asked May 04, 2024, 9:56 AM EDT

A stubborn weed has invaded my vegetable garden. It looks a bit like patches of grass. Pulling it just breaks off the green part. At the end of the root there is usually a little nut-like seed. Recently I have tried digging it out and with larger patches hoeing it and then picking out the weed. Enclosed is a photo. The two white roots are about 2-3". The green part is shown on the left. It is raining today otherwise I would go out and get more pictures. What is it? and how to I get rid of it? THANKS!!

Expert Response

There is not enough of the actual 'grass' growing for us to positively identify it. Are you able to take a photo of the grass growing in place? You can attach additional photos directly to this reply.

We wonder if it isn't perhaps a nutsedge:

If so, since it is in a vegetable/edible garden, we'd recommend going the mechanical (non-chemical) route to work on controlling it.

I think you're right that it is Yellow Nutsedge!  He is a nuisance!  hahaha
The digging will continue!
Thanks,
