Grubs in my lawn #866967

Asked May 03, 2024, 8:44 PM EDT

I was digging out weeds in my front lawn and started to see a lot of white grub worms, kind of fat and curled with a tan/ brown end. The lawn next door was damaged last year, a lot of bare spots. I can’t see damage in my area yet, but went and bought Grubex. After reading several articles,I’m confused on when to apply it.. Now? ( 1st week of May) or wait until June/ July when supposedly eggs are hatched? The guy at Bachman’s said I’ll have to apply in fall too.. who’s right?! I’d like to prevent them from damaging my lawn. I can return the Grubex and get something stronger, but Grubex seemed to be the happy medium between ineffective natural treatments and harsher treatments that kill off beneficial worms and bees. Please advise. Thanks Michele Robbinsdale

Expert Response

Dear Michele,

Thanks for reaching out! Here is a UMN Extension article on white grub control: https://extension.umn.edu/news/white-grub-control-lawns

The article states that treatments should be applied from late May to early August. You may wish to apply a short-lived, fast-acting, curative insecticide in August or September (options are given in the article). Treatments after early October are not effective and not recommended.

When applying the treatment, remember to read the label prior to use and follow the label directions attached to the treatment container you are using. The label is the law.

Good luck!
