The OSU Plant Clinic can test for Verticillium: see costs here and contact them for procedures.
Homeowners seldom test, but deal with problem plants with pruning, replacing with resistant plants as possible. Here is an entry from WSU about Verticillium in maple, with clear photos illustrating the appearance of infected branches when cut.
